Timeless Craft: Knitting a Vintage 1963 Baby Carriage Cover

Materials:

  • around 420 yards of weight 5 bulky yarn
  • 6mm knitting needles – make sure you use ones long enough to hold the stitches. I will be using a circular set
  • 2 stitch markers

Stitches:

  • k – knit
  • p – purl
  • s*wyif – slip * stitches with yarn in front
  • [ss] – seed stitch border

Instructions:

Cast on 75 stitches.

Border:
Row 1: (k1, p1)*, rep * to end.

Work row 1 until you have 2 inches of border.

You will now being working the pattern while keeping 5 stitches of seed stitch on either side of the work that will serve as the border. It is helpful to place markers to note where the seed stitches start.

Pattern:

Row 1,3,5: [ss], *(k5, s5wyif), repeat from * to last five before marker, k5, [ss]
Row 2 and all even rows: [ss], purl to end, [ss]
Row 7: K7, *(insert right hand needle under the 3 loops of the slipped rows and into the next stitch on the left hand needle, knit stitch and loops together, k9), repeat from * across row, end K7
Row 9, 11, 13:  K10, * (s5wyif, K5) repeat from * across row, end K10.
Row 15: K12, *(insert right hand needle under the 3 loops of the slipped rows and into the next stitch on the left hand needle, knit stitch and loops together, k9) repeat from * across row, end K12.
Row 16: work Row 2.

Repeat rows 1 – 16 until you reach 30 inches from the cast on edge.

Work row 1 for 2 inches of border.

Bind off and weave in ends.
